He was for many\nyears a merchant, and acquired a handsome property; and like most merchants of\nhis day, he trafficked in ardent spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\nwas a husband and a father; but often it seemed that the demon of discord had\ntaken up her abode in his family: while his children, remained around the\npaternal fireside, it was uncommon for any one to enter, that dwelling and not\nwitness broils, contentions and tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M.\nwas a scoffer at religion, a Sabbath breaker, a swearer, and to sum all up in\none short word, he was a SOT. One who is competent to testify has declared,\nthat for a man who pretended to transact regular business, he was the most\nperfect sot he ever saw. There are some such instances, but they are seldom\nfound; and when they do occur, they only serve to mark the height from which\nthe guilty man has fallen\u2014they evince that \u201cwith the talents of an angel, a man\nmay be a fool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nsaid M. was a father\u2014happy would it have been had he remained childless\u2014happy\nfor several of his sons, had they never been born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The family of\nM. consisted of seven sons and three daughters. Two of the sons died in\nchildhood\u2014of the daughters it may be said they are ornaments to society. Five\nsons trod in the footsteps of their father, and even excelled him in vileness.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\neldest, J. became a merchant, and after spreading around him a physical and\nmoral desolation, laid down in a drunkard\u2019s grave before he had reached the\nnoon-day of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The second son, T. was also a merchant,\nand followed closely the example of his father and elder brother. He pursued\nhis business for a short time, was convicted of an infamous crime, suffered\nimprisonment for a number of years, was at length liberated, and when last\nheard of, was a wretched, loathsome, mendicant drunkard in one of the southern\ncities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nthird son, A. was also a merchant. But he excelled his teachers in crime.
