An end had been thus put to all regular\nconversation; and at this last outrage the aged father wept in silence, and\nsought to conceal his tears as he hurriedly sowed his field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nebullition of youthful fury had been caused, it was afterward discovered, by\nthe father\u2019s peremptory refusal of the usual supply of money. Like too many\nparents, foolishly indulgent, he had yielded to the dominion which his only son\npossessed on his heart, and had given liberally and often: this only created an\nappetite for more: he soon found himself compelled to give liberally, simply to\nget rid of his importunate duns. And having made the discovery which, as a wise\nman, he ought to have anticipated as naturally as any common effect from a\ncommon cause, that this free indulgence with money had led him into habits of\ndissipation, and that the present solicitation was made to enable him to take\nthe lead at a \u201cfrolic\u201d in the tavern of the adjacent village, he had positively\nrefused him. The young man now left his father\u2019s presence with a threat that \u201che\nwould have money, and just that sum which he needed; if not one way, at least\nby another, which he (his father) might <em>conjecture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nwas too much for a tender parent\u2019s heart to endure. He took hold of the\nPastor\u2019s arm and led him to the shade of an aged apple-tree; and placing him\nbeside his wife, who had joined him by this time, he sat down and wept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy\npoor ruined boy!\u201d was all he could now utter in his grief.
