licious. \u2018Neither circumcision, nor uncircumcision,\u2019\nthat is to say, no exterior virtues, or accomplishments, or mere profession, \u2018availeth\nany thing\u2019 \u2018before God at his bar, for our personal justification and\nacceptance\u2014no, nothing but our Redeemer\u2019s righteousness:\u2019 and for morals, \u2018nothing\nbut a new creature.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nthis, my dear friends, opens up the true secret why the philosopher and\nmoralist, who trust in human virtue alone, with all its defects, have never<\/em>\nsucceeded in this matter. There is nothing in philosophy, there is nothing in\nthe most eloquent declamation on virtue, nothing in the most persuasive words\nof man\u2019s wisdom, that can ever convey the life, or spirit, or principle of\nvital religion into the human heart, after having conquered all the opposition\nfrom the devil, the world, and the flesh. Hence these never did, and they never\ncan convert a man; they never have made, they never can make a true Christian.\nThey may appear to be limpid streams; but they are the streams of Damascus; not\nthe divinely appointed and health-giving waters of the River of the God of\nIsrael. The life of the Spirit of God is not in them. \u2018If any man be in Christ\nJesus, he is a new creature.\u2019 \u2018I through the law, am dead to the law, that I\nmight LIVE unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not\nI, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live\nby the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.\u2019 Hence,\nit is only when we are risen with Christ, that we seek those things which are\nabove,\u2019 and do \u2018mortify our members,\u2019 and bring forth the fruits of holiness in\n\u2018good works which God hath ordained that we should walk in them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\nis easy to see, then, that where \u2018the life of Christ\u2019 is wanting, no fruits of\nholiness can<\/em> be produced: this \u2018life of Christ\u2019 wanting, the very basis\nof pure<\/em> morality is wanting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut\nthe Spirit of God is the only author of this life. For this is the testimony of\nGod, \u2018We are his workmanship, created anew in Christ Jesus,\u2019 \u2018by the washing of\nregenera\u00adtion, and the renewing of the Holy. Ghost.\u2019 Eph. 2 : 10: Titus, 3 : 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
