Ghost\nemploys, not the moral declamation, and the enticing words of the philosophy of\nthis world; not the persuasions of ‘science falsely so called;’ these may be\nuseful and ornamental in their place: they may be as choice pearls: but what\nare pearls to a hungering and thirsting soul ? what are pearls to the famished\nArab in the dry and barren wilder- ness? It is the voice of God only that\nraises the dead: it is the precious truth of the Gospel alone which the Holy\nGhost employs to convince and convert sinners; it is the bread and the water of\nlife alone, that can bring back the fainting spirit of man, and can sustain the\nlife of God in the soul. The words of our Lord are explicit on this point. \u2018We\nare born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of\nGod, which liveth and abideth for ever, And this is the word which, by the\nGospel, is preached unto you.\u2019 And, under a deep sense of our responsibility,\nand in the faithful and diligent use of all the means and ordinances appointed\nof God, \u2018we purify our souls in obeying the truth, through the Spirit, unto\nunfeigned love of the brethren,\u2019 \u2018and building up ourselves on our most holy\nfaith, praying in the Holy Ghost, we keep ourselves in the love of God,\u2019 and \u2018grow\nin grace,\u2019 till we come unto the perfect man; to the measure of the stature of\nthe fulness of Christ.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd,\nI need not tell you, my friend, how fruitless would be your labor in planting,\nin this beautiful orchard of yours, a tree, \u2018twice dead,\u201d which had been, long\nago, \u2018plucked up by the roots;\u2019 or, how fruitless would be your utmost\ndiligence and painstaking in plowing and sowing these fine fields of yours, if\nyou throw in the wrong seed.<\/em> He who resorts to human means, and human\nwisdom only, in the training of his family, and adopts the world\u2019s cold and\nlifeless morality, instead of \u2018the living and powerful word\u2019 of God\u2019s Gospel,\nis actually sowing tares<\/em> instead of wheat, <\/em>He may toil late and\nearly; but he will, at the last, be mortified to find that the crop will be tares,<\/em>\nand nothing but tares!<\/em> This, my dear friend, is the dangerous result of\nerring in the matter of<\/em> training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
