[304<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd permit me also to add here, that we who are pa-\nrents are often a good deal defective in another valuable quality, or virtue,\nif you will allow me to call it so\u2014I mean, <em>cheerfulness.<\/em> To the absence\nof this, and the influence of moroseness, may we not, in a great measure,\nascribe the aversion so manifest in many young people, of the higher and\nmiddling ranks, to the topic of religious conversation? In all our allusions\nand conversations on the matter of religion, we should carefully study to make\nit what it is in sober reality, the most lovely and the most charming thing in\nthe world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMuch wisdom and spiritual skill are required in\nmaking a<strong>\n<\/strong>cheerful and exhilarating improvement\nof the <em>Sabbath evening.<\/em> In recalling to memory and reviewing the duties\nand exercises of the day, we should studiously endeavor to make our fireside\nand Sabbath evening conversations the most delightful and most captivating\npossible to the young mind. There are some parents and masters of families so\nstern, so awful, so morose in their manner, that their exhibitions of the\nlovely Gospel of Christ are really revolting to<strong> <\/strong>young persons. They seem to mistake sternness for solemnity,\nmoroseness for zeal, and a spirit to find fault with and chide every one, for a\nspirit of piety and purity. They seem as if they took a pleasure in picturing\nout religion, not as an angel in robes of glory, but as a dark and lowering\ndemon, come to rob us of our joys! This cannot fail to excite disgust. To this\ncause, and also, in an equal, if not superior degree, to another cause\u2014I mean\nthe total absence of all religious conversation at a parent\u2019s fireside, do I ascribe\nthat prevailing dislike for religious conversation among young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut, my dear friends, while I recommend <em>cheerfulness,<\/em><strong> <\/strong>I would implore every Christian parent to be on his\nguard against the want of a proper and becoming gravity. An ill-timed <em>levity<\/em>\nhas, in many instances, produced lasting and most injurious consequences.\nGravity and cheerfulness are perfectly consistent, and even congenial: it is\nthe former which prevents the latter from degenerating into utter levity.\nNever, on a Sabbath evening, and never on a religious subject, should becoming\ngravity permit the introduction of <em>wit and levity;<\/em> far less, \u2018foolish\ntalking or jesting, which are<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>16 THE SPOILED CHILD.
